Social Media Marketing: A Hands-on Workshop with the Guru Himself – Dave Evans

June 26th, 2009

For the enthusiasts of Social Media, which is geek speak for pleasurably whiling away time on social networks like Facebook, Twitter etc., June 24 ‘09 was a great day as they had the rare chance to participate in a workshop with the Social Media Marketing guru himself – Dave Evans. The workshop titled How to Create a Social Media Marketing Plan? was organized by the public relations firm 20:20 Media to launch their new social media company 20:20 WebTech. The day long session was well received and the participants made sure that they made full use of the time with the speaker Mr. Evans, the well known author of the book “Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day”.

The participants were an eclectic lot, ranging from young executives, CEO’s, Chief Marketing Officers, public relations, advertising and marketing professionals and other representatives from various sectors. EmpoweredSEO was represented by four of its key members – Mr. Ray Philip, COO; Mr. A. Sunil Dutt, Internet Marketing Manager; Mr. Chethan Kashyap T.H. and Mr. Heemanshu Pandey, Internet Marketing Executives.

The workshop in itself had four highly informative sessions:

1. Understanding of Social Media and Social Media Channels

2. Social Media Metrics

3. Social Media Monitoring: Creating the Framework – Part I

4. Social Media Monitoring: Creating the Framework – Part II

With a top down approach that looked at the conceptual idea at first and then progressively worked down to all the relevant details, the workshop provided the participants with extreme clarity of the topic at hand. The sessions were highly interactive and with ideas flowing to and fro the top business minds among various industries, assimilation and understanding of information was ensured. Not to mention the valuable networking opportunity that was a bonus to the participants.

The first session was about understanding the basic idea or concept of Social Media and Social Media Channels. It gave a bird’s eye view of the entire gamut of affairs and discussions were on about several social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, Digg, Wikis etc. Mr. Evans highlighted how such channels can be used effectively in brand building and attracting the target audience.

The metrics that provide much needed information on how effectively the business is able to leverage the channels were covered in great detail in the second session: Social Media Metrics. The various tools that are used to track data and traffic, do’s and don’ts of Social Media etc. were highlighted with topical and apt examples of FlyKingFisher, Dell and Comcast on Twitter. The examples served to present an unambiguous picture of how right usage of social media can enhance the business and how bloopers tarnish the image of the brand.

The third session and fourth sessions were all about Social Media Monitoring. Web Analytics, how monitoring tools are used; ROI, etc. formed the core of the session. Mr. Evans also gave pertinent tips on strategies to promote clients in the Social Media arena, how to build traffic and how to continue building on the strong foundation created once the initial efforts have borne fruit.

With interactive exercises peppered throughout the sessions, the speakers and listeners interchanged roles quite often. The workshop concluded with a review and recap of all the topics covered. The evening was quite enjoyable with Mr. Dave Evans distributing a free copy of his famous book – “Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day” and graciously consenting for a photo session with the participants.
